Lexington One schools receive Walmart grants

 

Lexington County School District One Superintendent Karen Woodward congratulates Pleasant Hill Middle Principal Thomas Rivers and Gilbert High Assistant Principal Laura Covington on receiving grants for $750 from the Walmart Foundation and the Lexington Walmart Store.

Gilbert High’s grant supports efforts to improve literacy and writing skills for ninth-graders.

Pleasant Hill Middle plans to use the money to support the personal mobile computing initiative.

LES students practice math skills at Congaree National Forest

 

Lexington Elementary fourth-grade students learn how to measure the age of a Cypress tree while visiting the Congaree National Forest.

 

During their visit, students received a guided tour and a hands-on demonstration of how to measure the age of a tree. The fourth-graders measured, applied their mathematics knowledge and calculated that the Cypress tree is more than 750 years old.

LHS Girls Golf team receives invite to the 2013 Antigua National High School Invitational

 

After completing another successful season, the Lexington High Girls Golf Team recently received an invitation to the 2013 Antigua National High School Invitational in Scottsdale, Arizona. 

 

The LHS team is the first South Carolina team to compete at the invitational, which is the only national tournament for high school girls.  In the past, this tournament has included top teams from Arizona, Florida, Nevada, Texas and Hawaii and more than 200 junior golfers.

MES celebrates 10 year anniversary of school song

During the school’s annual Winter Holiday Sing-Along, Midway Elementary celebrated the 10th anniversary of the writing of the school’s song “The Midway March.”

 

Mallory and Cameron Jones wrote the lyrics of the song 10 years ago when Mallory was a first-grader at MES and Cameron was a fourth-grader. They returned to MES in December along with their parents, where they were presented with a framed set of documents chronicling the history of “The Midway March.” Copies of those documents will soon be on display at the school.

Starting today through Tuesday, Jan. 8, Food Lion shoppers may help their local schools earn up to $20,000 by collecting box tops from specially-marked General Mills products.

The “Return to School” program offers customers the opportunity to purchase any six specially-marked General Mills products at any Food Lion store, and collect the box tops to earn money for their local school. Food Lion also participates in events throughout the year to support the Box Tops for Education program.

Lexington One announces Ken Lake retiring

Lexington County School District One Superintendent Karen Woodward announces that Lexington Technology Center Director Kenneth W. Lake plans to retire effective June 30, 2013.

 

About the upcoming retirement Woodward said, “Ken Lake has been a devoted and passionate leader of Lexington Technology Center. He has developed innovative, forward-thinking educational opportunities that are recognized throughout our state and nation.
