Museum hosts contest for class to see Secrets of the Maya

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The South Carolina State Museum is offering a South Carolina school class a chance to see the Secrets of the Maya exhibit for free.  The museum is hosting an online contest to determine the winner.

Teachers who would like to sign thier classes up for the contest can go to the museum's Facebook page for an entry form. Teachers can enter their classes from January 16 to February 6.

Visitors to the museum's Facebook page can vote on the class they would like to see get the free field trip.

WKHS student completes senior project at S.C. Aquarium

 

White Knoll High student Erica Dickinson traveled to Charleston to job shadow at the South Carolina Aquarium.

 

Dickinson spent a day at the aquarium where she experienced behind-the-scenes responsibilities of employees and volunteers. She visited the Sea Turtle hospital, observed the feeding and cleaning routines and learned about the aquarium’s role in caring for sick and injured species.

Lexington County School District One Superintendent Karen Woodward congratulates Pleasant Hill Middle Teacher Dot Hardin for receiving the Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award from the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

 

The award recognizes the efforts of individuals, like Hardin, who have produced significant and substantial effects on the teaching and learning of mathematics in South Carolina.

Lexington County School District One Superintendent Karen Woodward congratulates Pleasant Hill Middle Principal Thomas Rivers and Gilbert High Assistant Principal Laura Covington on receiving grants for $750 from the Walmart Foundation and the Lexington Walmart Store.

Gilbert High’s grant supports efforts to improve literacy and writing skills for ninth-graders.

Pleasant Hill Middle plans to use the money to support the personal mobile computing initiative.

LES students practice math skills at Congaree National Forest

 

Lexington Elementary fourth-grade students learn how to measure the age of a Cypress tree while visiting the Congaree National Forest.

 

During their visit, students received a guided tour and a hands-on demonstration of how to measure the age of a tree. The fourth-graders measured, applied their mathematics knowledge and calculated that the Cypress tree is more than 750 years old.
