NPES students stack Oreos® for science

Anna Frye’s third-grade class at New Providence Elementary participated in the Our Really Exciting Online (O.R.E.O) Project 2012.

Students around the United States participated in the project that provides a fun way for students to apply the scientific method. Working in small groups, students begin by predicting how many Oreos® they can stack before the tower of cookies tumbles over. Students then get two chances to test their hypothesis without using any support to prop up the stack of cookies. The class then calculates a class average.

According to results posted on the project’s website, 503 classes from around the country participated in the project with an average of 19 cookies for the third grade. Frye’s class easily beat that average with an average of 26 cookies.
