"It'll look like a first class stadium." -- New field turf has Irmo High officials boasting | News
IRMO, SC (WIS)- "We feel like it was good enough for the NFL, it's good enough for Irmo."
That's Irmo High School Athletics Director Bob Hanna, and his football field has seen better days.
"We've had a lot of issues with this field over the years," Hanna said.
"When you have a band competition in rainy weather, you can kiss your field goodbye."
So what's good enough for the NFL and Irmo High School? Field turf. The stuff the pros use to play on and, according to Hanna, it feels just like grass.
The field will be filled with rubber and sand, and cushioning will be built in with the new turf to help blunt certain injuries that football players can get on the field.
"Did a cost analysis of it, and over a period of time it ends up paying for itself," Hanna said.
Hanna says the new field will also eliminate drainage problems they've had over the years.
It may not be real, but Hanna plans on boasting about his new turf like he would his front yard.
"You're going to see a beautiful field," Hanna said. "It's going to be every five yards a different shade of green so it's light, dark. All the lines are going to be dead straight."
"It'll look like a first class stadium."
The district says the new turf will also be installed at Dutch Fork High School and Chapin High School.
