Advanced Disposal Teams Up with the Town to Increase Recycling | Environment

Advanced Disposal and Irmo’s Town Council today announced their joint recycling campaign, which will begin the week of August 6. Irmo is the first town in the Midlands area to roll out new, 65-gallon green recycling carts to its residents in an effort to increase recycling and reduce the amount of recyclable materials being landfilled.
Beginning July 30, residents will receive new, outrageous green, 65-gallon recycling carts for every other week recycling collection on residents’ normal garbage pickup day. Advanced Disposal will collect the old collection bins when they distribute the new carts or on residents’ first recycle day.
The first week for recycling collection will begin August 6 and will run every other week thereafter.
“Irmo has a good recycling program in place, but we were finding that the majority of those who recycled completely filled their 18-gallon bin and put the additional recyclables out with their garbage,” said Hardee Horne, Advanced Disposal’s municipal marketing and government affairs manager.
“The new, 65-gallon carts will allow residents to recycle nearly three times as much material. We’re happy to partner with Irmo and hope to see other Midlands communities follow Irmo’s lead.”
The Irmo Town Council voted earlier this year to implement the program with a goal of increasing recycling by as much as 20 percent. Advanced Disposal will pick up a total of 25 different recyclable items including: plastic food, beverage, detergent bottles and jugs labeled 1-7, water bottles, metal cans, aluminum cans, newspapers and inserts, magazines, catalogs, telephone books, brown paper bags, corrugated cardboard, office paper, copy paper, file folders, file or packing boxes, junk mail, cereal boxes, brown or gray fiber packages and all types of glass. Service is single-stream recycling, so there is no sorting required by the residents.
