Woodmen of the World will present the organization’s Life Saving Award to four Lexington County Detention Center correctional officers, one Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputy and one former Detention Center correctional officer during an awards banquet that will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 at the organization’s office, 3620 Augusta Road, West Columbia.

United Way hotline helps SC families with taxes

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Some families in South Carolina are getting help doing their taxes this year thanks to the United Way.
    
The organization has set up a hotline staffed by volunteers offering free tax assistance. The help is open to families statewide that make less than $50,000. People can dial 2-1-1 from any phone, 24 hours a day, and set up an appointment from now until April 15.
    
United Way's South Carolina call center has logged more than 10,000 calls for tax help so far this year. More than 6,800 appointments have been set up.

After enthusiastic crowds packed Speakeasy for the February and March Science Cafés, EngenuitySC's popular networking event and lecture series continues with the annual "Nuclear Café." This time, guests will enjoy an informal talk on the current state of nuclear science and energy in South Carolina by SmartState Endowed Chair Dr. Dan Gabriel Cacuci on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Speakeasy cocktail bar in Five Points.

Come out and join community members in celebrating the legacy of the late Senator Isadore Lourie as the Capital Senior Center is renamed "The Lourie Center".

The Capital Senior Center Renaming Celebration will take place on April 18th from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. The celebration will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and live entertainment. Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available.

City of Columbia Parks and Recreation’s NOMA Community Garden will be soon be getting some special visitors.  The community garden will be in included in the inaugural statewide Midlands Farm Tour happening Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7, 2013 from 1-5 p.m. on both days.

Keep the Midlands Beautiful, in partnership with the Town of Irmo will host a Good, Clean, Fun Saturday on April 13, from 9:00 a.m. – noon.

Volunteers will meet at the Irmo Town Hall parking lot located at 7300 Woodrow Street, Irmo. (If your Irmo neighborhood would like to organize their own cleanup and need help with supplies, contact Keep the Midlands Beautiful)
